Recess Breaks and Rules for Play
Recess is an important aspect of the school life and helps to foster learning at CISH.
Students of different ages have recess at different times throughout the day. Early Years and PYP students play outside (weather permitting) three times per day.
During recess, students must use the playground equipment correctly and avoid unnecessary rough play or unsafe behavior. Students should always follow the directions of the adult on duty.
If a student is not behaving properly or is playing unsafely, the teacher on duty will stop the unsafe or inappropriate behavior and have a conversation with student, reinforcing the guidelines for safe play. Students may be asked to sit and reflect on their behavior for 3-10 minutes before being allowed to resume play. For more serious behavior concerns that requires additional follow up, the behavior will be reported to the Homeroom teacher, the Pastoral Care Coordinator and/or the principal for additional follow up.
Parents will be contact if a student repeatedly shows that they cannot behave properly during recess or if the student is engaged in a serious incident of misconduct.
During recess times, students have access to designated play areas. Students are separated by age level during recess times. EY, Lower PYP (G1-3), Upper PYP (G4-5), Middle School (G6-8) and High School (G10-12) students each have their own designated time and space for recess break. EY and Primary students have access to outdoor play areas, the field, outdoor courts, and the library during designated times. Older students have access to the indoor gym, the field, outdoor courts, the library and a board game room. Middle and High School students may also access the snack bar café during their break times. All students are to stay in their designated areas during recess times.
On rainy days and on days when the air quality index reaches greater than 200ppm, all PYP students will remain in their classrooms under the supervision of a duty teacher. MYP and DP students may remain in any of the regular indoor recess areas. Students are not permitted to be in a classroom without a teacher present.
All teachers are assigned to supervise students outside of class time during play and free times to ensure that play times are adequately monitored.
